Thanks for sharing your story.... you're totally right, there are so many ways that we can be involved in fashion that are more responsible but also within our financial reach. Buying second-hand, vintage, etc is one great way - rather than something going to landfill - we re-wear and repair it. But also just being more clever about shopping for fashion in general - i.e. save up for items that you truly want rather than going shopping on a whim, looking for quality and craftsmanship so that clothes will last a lifetime and taking more time to better care for the clothes that we have in our wardrobes. These small things won't cost a fortune nor the earth!

I was one of those people who would say that they don't have enough money to buy high quality, "eco" products, maybe one day I would say. But then I realised that there is so much more to this, you can start to contribute with your own share by conscious shopping, mixing vintage clothing with less of new pieces, donate old clothes to charities. There are some amazingly looking design brands promoting slow fashion movement out there that are actually not that pricey but in fact quite affordable (considering that buying one high-quality piece is better that wasting your money on clothes that wear off in no time and are ready to be thrown away). Plus the trends come and go, it's the style that truly endures!

I love this concept - the transparency and new approach to enabling consumers to learn more about the decisions made which informs what they are buying into. It slick and stylish and I look forward to following how people respond to this open approach to fashion design and manufacture.

African fashion and textile industry is slowly taking it's place in fashion and is having a revival that is extremely exciting and contemporary. Do check out my book Fashion Africa which looks at this from an ethical fashion perspective. More info is on my website for new social enterprise Africa Fashion Guide.
